Most Chicago boat tours rely on standard crew commentary. This one is different. The Chicago Architecture Center has run a docent-led river cruise since 1983, and the format sets the standard for architecture tours on the water: trained volunteer docents narrate the route, pointing out the towers, bridges, and design choices that made Chicago a laboratory of American architecture. The route itself exists because of engineering. In 1900, the river's flow was reversed through the Sanitary and Ship Canal, sending water toward the Mississippi basin instead of Lake Michigan, and the resulting lock system keeps the river navigable for boats today. Over the course of roughly one to 1.5 hours, you will pass landmark towers and learn how the city rebuilt, reached upward, and reshaped its own river.
