Since 1983, the Chicago Architecture Center has run its river cruise in partnership with Chicago's First Lady Cruises, and the format is unusual: your guide is a CAC-trained volunteer docent, not a crew member reading from a script. It used to flow into Lake Michigan, carrying sewage toward the city's drinking water supply and fueling outbreaks of typhoid and cholera. In 1889 the Sanitary District of Chicago was established to fix the problem, and on January 2, 1900, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal opened. That 28-mile canal connected the river to the Des Plaines River, letting gravity pull the flow toward the Mississippi basin instead.
